You Must Bear Fruit, John 15:5
During the Jesus
Ministry on earth He taught His disciples many things concerning the kingdom of
God and how to qualify to be a part of it.
Part of the
qualification is fruit bearing. He drew His analogy from what many people, in
His time, would be familiar with, namely, the purpose and experience of a crop
farmer.
God is the planter
and what He plants is a seed that germinates and grows into a fruit-bearing
tree. The tree is a vine which is
supposed to yield grapes used for producing wine, a much sought after drink.
1. Jesus is the true vine, John 15:1.
·
He is the true
Messiah but there are false messiahs
·
He is the true
prophet and teacher but there are false prophets, false teachers and false
witnesses. They bring forth bad fruits. He warned His disciples to keep away
from them, Matt. 7:15-20
·
There are false
christs. They are agents of satan, Mk. 13:21-22.
·
There are false
witnesses too, like the Pharisees, the Chief Priests and Scribes who made false
accusations against Him during His trial, Lk. 22:66-71
2. Just as He is the true vine Jesus is also the good Shepherd. As
He says the good Shepherd gives His life to the sheep, John 10:11.
All others who call themselves Shepherds are thieves
and robbers. They do not love the sheep. They want to steal or mislead them,
John 10:7-8.
3. What Jesus is saying is as follows:
·
As the true vine
he is in the world to show His disciples and, indeed the entire human race the
way to the Father, John 14:6. He is the vine. He is rooted in the Father and
that is why He is able to stand, despite fierce opposition from unbelieving
Jews, John 15:20
·
His disciples,
and indeed all who believe in Him, are the branches. For them to bear fruit
they must remain in Him, John 15:7-8
·
Because He comes
from the Father He has all His qualities, Gal. 5:22-23
4. To bear fruit you must allow these attributes to reflect in your
conduct. So when people see you they will say this man or woman is truly a
christian.
Remember the advice of Paul to the people of Corinth
“Be ye
followers of me even as I also am of Christ”, I Cor. 11:1, I Cor. 4:16
·
And if you are a
true follower of Christ, you will walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh Gal.
5;16
·
Believers who
bear fruit are
a.
The salt of the
earth
b.
They are the
light of the world.
They avoid darkness
c.
They allow their
light to shine such that their activities bring joy to the lives of others,
Matt. 5:13-16. They are a source of blessing ot others.
d.
Such believers do
not curse. Rather they repay evil with good, Rom. 12:14-21
5. The
responsibilities of fruit bearing christian include
i. Interceding
for others
ii. Giving,
Lk. 6:38
iii. Witnessing,
Acts 1:8
6. Christians who bear fruit will attract enemies but God will
protect them. Even if they suffer in this world they will inherit eternal life,
John 16:33
