Please note the following:
1. The
book of Ruth opened on the tragedy which befell Naomi in a foreign land. She
lost her husband and her two adult children whose wives also became premature
widows-Ruth and Orpah.
For
the three women it appeared as if their world had ended. Orpah chose to return
home. Note that her story ended at that point.
Ruth
decided to follow Naomi to her homeland and continue to look after her
mother-in-law. She did not know what the future held for her.
2. Her
loyalty, steadfastness and humility were richly rewarded as she was able to
exchange her poverty for wealth when she got married to Boaz. The product of
the marriage was Obed, David’s grandfather and future king of Israel.
3. As
Obed’s mother Ruth also shared in the genealogy of Christ, the King of kings,
Matt. 1:1-5.
4. And
Naomi, a tragic figure in the land of Moab, ended up as a happy grandmother of
Obed and, indirectly, a descendant of Christ.
5. The
story of Ruth and Naomi shows that God rewards loyal service and humility, two
of Ruth’s many attributes.
